About the Teachers

Srta. Ortiz

My name is Bertha (Srta) Ortiz, and this is my second year teaching at ISLA. I was born in Cuenca, Ecuador, but my family to moved to the United States when I was five years old.  Growing up I was fortunate to attend an immersion school in Minneapolis that taught me the importance of knowing two languages. Working at ISLA has provided me with a unique opportunity to use my native language.

In the Spring of 2014, I graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and family violence prevention minor. In May 2015 I attained my Masters of Education.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, cooking, listening to music and watching movies!

I look forward to a wonderful year being your child’s second-grade teacher.

Sincerely,

Srta. Ortiz
Srta. Hester

My name is Katie Hester and this will be my fourth year teaching at ISLA.  I graduated from St. Catherine University with a M.Ed. in Elementary Education and a STEM Certificatate. [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math]. I attended the University of Minnesota and in 2005 I graduated  Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Spanish Studies and minors in Family Social Science and Foreign Studies.

Language learning and global experiences began when I was 14 years old and lived with a host family in Cuernavaca, Mexico. While attending University, I traveled and surfed in Costa Rica and studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am extremely passionate about language, being exposed to new ideas, cultures and experiences, as well as endless learning. Ultimately, I am elated and blessed to be an educator in an International, Immersion School with such a strong school community, amazing staff and, or course, incredible students. I look forward to an amazing year ahead.

Cheers!
